If you believe the image, Eddie Irvine is an arrogant, rich playboy who is far more concerned with chasing models on to his speedboat in the Mediterranean than he is with helping Jaguar climb the ladder to Formula One success.
Some aspects of the way Irvine is perceived by the public are accurate, but the image belies the fact that he is far more dedicated to his job than some would have you believe. In fact, Irvine takes his racing very seriously - and he is very good at it. It's just that he makes no secret of the fact that when he is finished with it, he likes to switch off. Irvine can be off-hand in the extreme, and he is far from the most popular person in the Jaguar team. But, on balance, he has been their best asset in the last two seasons. The Ulserman put in some superb drives through 2000, and has continued to do so in 2001 - not least at Monaco, when he made the most of the best the car has been so far and finished on the rostrum. Irvine is bright, technically-minded, sharp about the car and he races hard. The fact that he plays hard as well is an irrelevant distraction from the fact that this is a very good racing driver indeed. |
