| STEWIE DEMPSTER Dempster's stature as a Test batsman of real class is identified by his batting average - second only to that of Sir Don Bradman. Some feel it may be inflated by playing only 10 Tests, but few of his time doubted his class. He had the distinction of scoring New Zealand's first century in Test cricket when he amassed 136 in the first Test against England in 1930. But it was three years earlier, on New Zealand's 1927 tour to England that he announced his arrival on the international stage. He amassed 2165 runs on the tour and then repeated his good form on the 1931 tour. Wisden rated him as one of their cricketers of the year in 1932 and he spent a number of season with Leicester in the 1930s, captaining them for three seasons as well as playing for Warwickshire, the Gentlemen against the Players and Scotland. |
