To say the Italian crowd was hostile to Switzerland's Gunthor would be somewhat of an understatement. They wanted their countryman Alessandro Andrei to win gold - which meant that every time Gunthor stepped into the circle he was assailed by whistles and jeers.
The catcalls had completely the opposite effect to that which was intended. Gunthor used them to pump himself up and came up with a mark of 22.23m, a new championship record, while Andrei could manage only 21.88m and had to settle for silver.
Rome had been stormed - and the plebeians were stunned.
