men's final :: Rome 1987
The high jump is always a tension-filled, tactical event. But 14 years ago in Rome it was about as close as it is possible to get.

After a gripping battle watched by an awestruck crowd, there was impasse.

The first three men - Sweden's Patrik Sjoberg, Igor Paklin of the Soviet Union and his compatriot Gennadiy Avdeyenko - had all cleared 2.38m. You couldn't separate them by the width of a vest.

So it went to count-back - and Sjoberg, the chain-smoking, mullet-wearing Scandinavian playboy, was crowned world champion.
