Lars Riedel bags his fourth gold
men's final :: Athens 1997
Riedel, a computer salesman from Zwickau in Germany, is the Sergei Bubka of the discus. Having taken gold in Tokyo, Stuttgart and Gothenburg, he went into the final in Athens as clear favourite.

Little matter than the crowds were sparse when he came out to throw. He led from the first round and threw his championship winner in the third - a mark of 68.54m, a monstrous 1.86m further than the silver medallist Virgilijus Alekna of Lithuania.

The only surprise was that two years later in Seville he had to settle for bronze.
