Smith is new Wakefield head coach

Wakefield Super League club Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have appointed caretaker boss Tony Smith as their new head coach.

The former Great Britain scrum-half, 35, has signed a two-year deal after guiding the Belle Vue side to safety following Shane McNally's sacking.

Club chief executive Diane Rogerson said the decision to put Smith in charge had been a good one, insisting: "He has re-paid our confidence in him."

Smith added: "I'm thrilled to secure the role on a permanent basis."
