Panorama: Can Tesco Save the World? was broadcast on BBC One at 8.30pm on Monday, 30 November 2009.
Perhaps BBC television executives realise that the BBC has a duty to save the planet too. The Beeb is doing a good job at a seemingly impossible task - changing the consumption culture of the human race. Well done for biting the bullet with this excellent Panorama edition.

Great programme, felt it really highlighted how the government has 'missed the boat' with regard to green energy. There does seem to be a mindset among some people that the costs are too much and/or not worth it. The village in Scotland clearly shows the opportunities available. Yes, people are going to make money, it is business and there is a huge market waiting to be developed. Thought the response from Ed Miliband was poor, to say the least. Does he really know what is going on?

From a passionate climate change activist, this was a very disappointing programme. Let's leave aside the uncritical examination of Tesco (everything about them could have come from a corporate press release). The section on Jim Mellon was far too flattering. Five minutes' digging (ST Rich List) uncovers the fact that this is a man who invests heavily in 'Chinese coal', absolutely the worst business for the environment anywhere on the planet. You regained some credibility with challenges to Miliband's usual empty platitudes, but there wasn't enough time to really pin him to the wall. Like most BBC factual programmes these days, this Panorama suffered from an 'Attention Deficit Disorder' which assumes the viewer isn't interested in examining big issues for any length of time, and has to jump restlessly from one area to another.
