Panorama: Will the Scots ever be happy? was broadcast on BBC One at 8.30pm on Monday 29 June 2009.

In this union of 65-odd million, the Scots are only 4 to 5 million - about the same size as Yorkshire and Humber. So why don't the people of Yorkshire have exactly the same as the Scots? What about England? Where is the English devolution, an English parliament with the same powers? If we are still a United Kingdom then we are still all equal as the Scottish parliament. Where is our referendum?

Thanks for highlighting the issue of Scottish independence and the ways in which the rest of Britain is subsidising them - which has received little airing south of the border to date. I am an Englishman who spent his teenage years in Scotland. I had no idea I was English until I lived there - and while most Scots were friendly, the underlying hatred of my country was always apparent. I can confirm that the schools re-enforce this.

How can Professor Curtice of Strathclyde University claim to speak with any authority on the views of people living in England? To claim there is no desire for English political recognition in the form of a parliament is a gross misrepresentation of the situation as recent opinion polls show. The people of Scotland have been asked their views, those of us living in England NEVER have.

There is, and always will be, only one simple solution to this and that is independence and the ability for Scotland to control its own affairs. Independence would allow Scotland to release its potential and flourish!

The UK is doomed and I personally cannot wait for the day when Scotland becomes a truly free independent nation. No need for a union, last piece of a bygone age. To think that Scotland requires the UK to survive is frankly a revolting, if not racist, remark to make. Having lived in smaller nations all over Europe there is nothing bad I could say about living in a small country. So stop with this nonsense and let the peaceful transition of power happen.

The Scots should have total independence on condition they take back Gordon Brown and the rest of his Scottish cronies and have no say in determining English affairs. If they can prosper in spite of him then they fully deserve it!!

Whilst I commend the BBC for looking at an important issue, I have to say that I was disappointed with the show. I would have liked a deeper analysis of the unfairness of the Barnett formula and for questions about it to be put to the Prime Minister and Alex Salmond. There was nothing really new in the programme and I fear this was due to the watering down of Panorama. I'm sure the old Panorama would have addressed the issue with more depth.

I felt that your programme ignored and placed little weight on the wishes of ALL the Scottish people and more on the SNP objectives (a classic case of the tail wagging the dog). I like the UK the way it is (warts and all!) and I have heard no convincing argument why my rights and aspirations are any less valid than those of the SNP. Although the SNP may not want or believe it, we live in a democracy and it's about time the silent majority in the UK were given their rights to vote on what is, or what is not, right for the country as a whole.
