Soviet and American soldiers met at the River Elbe in Germany on 25 April 1945. Hitler's army had been successfully cut in two and peace at last seemed close.

American GI Lt Robertson and Russian soldier Lt Sylvashko posed for a victory photograph – perhaps one of the last gestures of friendship before almost 50 years of enmity during the Cold War.
