1066 And all that
How would the BBC have reported events like the Great Fire of London in 1666 or the death of William the Conqueror in 1087?

You can find out here this month. On This Day's news archive starts in 1950, but during September we will be reporting on some of the biggest events of the last 1,000 years as if they were breaking news.

We have written these special stories to mark Archive Awareness Month, a campaign to open up many archives around the UK and encourage the public to look at the treasures they contain.

It is being run by the National Archives, an organisation charged by the government with looking after one of the largest collections of documents in the world, spanning 1,000 years of British history.

The millions of manuscripts in these archives contain your history: valuable information about your families, culture, society - and a good few secrets too.

Why not go to one of the many Archive Awareness events held around the country this month and see what you can discover? You can find more details by clicking on the link in the right hand column.

Or why not have a go at making some of your own history?

The On This Day team is still on the look-out for "witnesses" to our special historical stories - though our editor will allow a little more creativity than usual!

If you think you can rival Samuel Pepys' description of pigeons "hovering about the windows and balconies till they burned their wings and fell down" when recounting the Great Fire of London, then get writing.

Thank you for all your emails so far - the best ones will be published on the On This Day website in early October.
