Lehman collapse dominates papers

Papers The fallout from the "world's biggest bankruptcy" - that of investment bank Lehman Brothers - unites headline writers on Tuesday.

"Nightmare on Wall Street", says the Guardian's front page. But the paper has little sympathy, saying "ticking time bombs" went off at the bank.

"Crash!", cries the Independent. It also blames "a decade of greed-filled hubris" for Lehman Brothers' demise.

The Times, too, says "an aggressive chief executive and ineffective board" were at fault for the global financial "shockwave" which has been produced.

'Gorilla of Greed'

The tabloids focus on the impact of Lehman Brothers' collapse in Britain.

"Crash, bang, wallop", says the Sun's front page. "We will all pay a price for unscrupulous bankers who threw caution - and our money - to the wind."

The Daily Mirror rounds on the "Gorilla of Greed", Lehman's chief executive Dick Fuld, who "will send our mortgage bills spiralling".

"Meltdown Monday will hit every saver, pension investor and homeowner" in the UK warns the Daily Mail.

Labour's 'anarchy'

Gordon Brown's continuing troubles occupy some newspapers, including the Daily Express.

The paper quotes a psychologist who says he should adopt a Winston Churchill-style of leadership.

He says Churchill was superb at setting out the difficulties, while maintaining a mood of national optimism.

The Times has little hope though. One of its writers says Mr Brown's survival is a "physical impossibility" as "anarchy breaks out" within his party.

'Dashing solution'

The decision by Prince William to join the RAF as a search and rescue pilot is praised by several papers.

The Daily Telegraph's Andrew Pierce calls it a "dashing solution to a front-line ban".

Slightly more cynically, he also calls it a "shrewd public relations move" which "will generate an endless supply of positive headlines".

The Daily Mail says he may be posted to the Falklands where he will carry out "hazardous" rescues in rough seas.
