The Libertines top albums chart

The Libertines The Libertines have entered the album chart at number one in the week that ex-member Pete Doherty narrowly escaped a prison sentence.

The band's self-titled second album knocked Prodigy from the top of the chart, with Maroon 5 at number two.

Doherty, who parted company with The Libertines earlier this year, was given a suspended four month jail sentence for possession of a flick knife.

US rapper Nelly entered the singles chart at number one with My Place.

The single, a double A-side also featuring the song Flap Your Wings, ended Natasha Bedingfield's two-week chart reign.

She fell into fourth position with These Words, ahead of Three of a Kind's Baby Cakes at number five.

Other new entries included Jojo's Leave (Get Out) at number two and Sunshine by Twista - which samples Bill Withers' Lovely Day - at number three.

Comeback singles from Paul Weller and Darren Hayes failed to make it into the Top 10, stalling at number 11 and number 12 respectively.

The Libertines album follows their recent single Can't Stand Me Now, their fifth UK Top 40 hit.

The guitar band's debut album, Up The Bracket, was released in October 2002.
