Honorary president of the NUM Arthur Scargill will address a meeting in Belfast

The former leader of the National Union of Mineworkers, Arthur Scargill, will address a Belfast meeting to mark the 25th anniversary of the miners' strike.

The Unite union has organised the event to commemorate the industrial action between March 1984 and March 1985.

Thousands of miners went on strike in protest at the Conservative government's plan to close pits.

Unite is also planning a day of protest next month against the current government's handling of the recession.

"The inaction endangers the social fabric and the economic future of Northern Ireland," said Jimmy Kelly, Unite's Irish regional secretary.

"As we prepare, it will be good to look back and learn lessons from the past."
