Basra and the south:

  • British forces have launched an offensive against Iraqi forces in the suburb of Abu al-Qassib and are reportedly moving towards Basra

  • Troops have also consolidated their position in al-Zubayr, according to BBC correspondent Ben Brown, after what one commander described as "very brutal street fighting

  • One British soldier has been killed, the UK confirmed. Iraq says it has inflicted "heavy casualties" on UK forces in the area
