Newsnight viewers ditch weather

Newsnight viewers have voted to drop the show's new weather bulletin in favour of the old business update.

The 30-second forecast was introduced last week but sparked an unexpected protest from people who wanted their late-night slice of stock market prices and exchange rates.

After being inundated with e-mails, editor Peter Barron decided the best solution was to let the audience decide by running a vote and the results were announced on Thursday.

Of nearly 6,000 people who voted, the majority of viewers favoured the return of the market update (for 3,679, against 2,242).

"The people have spoken and we must listen," said Barron.

"Newsnight weather will make one last appearance on our first Saturday election special [April 16] and the markets will return on Monday's programme.

"Commiserations to all those who enjoyed the weather, but at least it's been a good day for democracy."
