iPhone red gem download shelved

A controversial iPhone download that charges users $999.99 (£513) to display a glowing red gem has been pulled from Apple's online software store.

The "I am Rich" application was created by an independent developer called Armin Heinrich.

It lets users download a gem screensaver with a "secret mantra" that reveals how to "stay rich, healthy and successful."

The application has no links to the Californian computer giant.

Apple launched its application store last month for users of both versions of the iPhone as well as its top-end iPod touch.

Thousands of original software programmes are available from calculators and office applications to 3D games, many of which are free.

The vast majority are not made by Apple but by thousands of independent developers.

As the retailer, Apple says it takes a 30% cut of any sale to cover running costs with 70% going to the software author.

'No joke'

The $999.99 "I am Rich" application was sold as a "work of art with no hidden functions at all".

The sales pitch went on to say: "The red icon on your iPhone or iPod touch always reminds you (and others when you show it to them) that you were able to afford this."

But at least one unnamed iPhone user claims to have downloaded the application by mistake.

He said: "I forgot my wife had "iclick" activated on my desktop. I called my Visa card and they verified that I was charged $999.99 and they were awaiting verification from the vendor.

"This is no joke. Apple must start to screen these applications."

"I Am Rich" has now been removed from the iPhone download store. It no longer appears in searches or in the list of software developed by Armin Heinrich.
