Kate Nash to open Glastonbury

Kate Nash Brit Award-winner Kate Nash is to kick off this year's Glastonbury Festival.

Fresh from scooping the best British female title, she will open the festival from the Pyramid stage on Friday 27 June.

She will join Kings of Leon, The Verve and Jay-Z - the first rapper to headline the event - on the bill.

A graduate of the BRIT school, the Foundations singer's debut album Made of Bricks has sold half a million copies in the UK to date.

She recently returned from a series of gigs in Canada, America, New Zealand and Australia.

The 20-year-old beat off competition from KT Tunstall, PJ Harvey and fellow BRIT school alumni Leona Lewis to claim the best female title on Wednesday.

It's academic

On picking up her award she emphasized the importance of arts in education and said that university wasn't for everyone.

She said: "Not everybody is academic and not all of us get into university like, but don't worry if you don't."

Nash was also nominated for British breakthrough act but lost out to Mika.

She is also up for two NME Awards - best solo act and best dressed - which take place on 28 February.

Her UK tour starts on 24 February in Belfast and her new single Merry Happy is due out on 24 March.
