Olympic profile: Kelly Sotherton

Newsbeat meets the 31-year-old heptathlete who wants a gold medal.

The seven events of the heptathlon do not roll off Kelly Sotherton's tongue with the greatest of ease.

But she's been competing at the highest level for a number of years, and the Beijing games could be her crowning glory.

The 31-year-old took home bronze from Greece, narrowly missing out on the silver place.

And this year the queen of the heptathlon, Sweden's Carolina Kluft, is out injured, leaving the way open for a new champion.

Sotherton told Newsbeat: "I haven't done a heptathlon this year, so I'm going in there kind of as an underdog, but also favourite to take the gold medal.

"There is pressure there but I really don't feel it. I probably will do slightly when I'm there, but I deal with it quite well."

When she runs the final event, the 800m, she'll be wearing the lightest pair of running spikes in the world.

A major sports company have developed a pair especially for her that only weigh 93g, the same as a bar of chocolate with a bite taken out of it.

The Isle of Wight born athlete has a string of medals to her name including Commonwealth gold, but at 31 it's pretty much now or never for the Olympics.

Fish and chips

But her strict training regime has not stopped her from enjoying life.

She said: "The other day I did go to the chippy and have fish and chips."

Kelly says she really wants to be on the Scott Mills show

Her excuse? "It's protein and it's carbs.

"I don't have it all the time, so every few weeks it's ok. I had a bacon sandwich yesterday, but the rest of the time I am pretty good.

"I have a balanced diet and that's what you need."

Sotherton goes to the cinema a lot and always hits the shops when the sales are on.

When she's training she uses Kanye West, Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park to psyche herself up.

And she is very partial to a bit of Scott Mills.

She added: "I love Scott Mills. He's from Southampton, he's from my part of the world. I do love Chris Moyles too, they're my two favourites.

"I'd love to be on Scott Mills's show, he's hilarious. So Scott, I'd like to be on your show.

"Please..."
