Kate Nash has told Newsbeat she wants to have her next album out in the UK by next summer.

Her debut album, Made of Bricks, went straight to number one in the chart when it was released in August 2007.

It helped her to win best British female artist at the Brits and best solo artist at the NME awards.

She said: "I'm writing, it's really exciting just to have some time off and I'm just making demos really on my computer like I used to."

Nash is currently dating Ryan Jarman from Leeds band, The Cribs and has admitted she may go for more of a punk influenced sound.

But she claims to be equally as influenced by sixties girl-pop bands like The Supremes and told the NME that she had been inspired to write a track called Cat Song in their honour.

Playing live

Nash claims she hopes to play some live dates to help her knuckle down and finish the album.

She said: "I'm doing a couple of small gigs because I start writing songs and then I leave them for ages and the only way to really force myself to finish them is if I'm like, 'Oh my God, I'd better do this live'.

"Then I have to write something.

"Hopefully by January I'll be back in the studio. I want to do be doing stuff in spring or summer."
