The Futureheads have told Newsbeat they are headlining the John Peel Stage at this year's Glastonbury.

The Futureheads

It has been a little over a year since the band were dropped by their label, 679 Recordings.

Alongside their management, the Futureheads have launched their own label, Nul Records, and will release their new album, This Is Not The World, in May.

Singer Barry Hyde says the band is flattered to be asked to play at Glastonbury.

He said: "I hope I haven't just jinxed myself, I'm touching wood as I say this but if we get to do it, it'll be such an honour.

"For us to come back a year after being dropped and headline his tent, will be such an amazing, gratifying experience for us."

A true hero

The John Peel Stage was renamed, from the New Bands Tent, following the Radio 1 legend's death in 2004.

Hyde says the band are honoured to help carry on his name.

He said: "He's sorely missed and he will be for a long time.

"He was a true hero of music, a true champion of music."

For us to come back a year after being dropped and headline his tent, will be such an amazing, gratifying experience for us.

The Futureheads will also play the V Festival, T in the Park and Fuji Rock in Japan.

Hyde reckons playing in front of up to 60,000 music fans is a real challenge.

He said: "I feel it sorts the men from the boys because a festival gig can consume a band within about two minutes if the band aren't completely up for it and confident.

"Its a true test and we love that kind of nervous energy you get.

"Playing your biggest gig without a soundcheck, quite terrifying really."

Registration for Glastonbury tickets has now closed.
