The singer, whose new album - Rated R - is out this week, later took the stage in this revealing white bodysuit.
Shakira gave Rihanna a run for her money in the glam stakes with this little black dress. Fans vote for the AMAs online and prizes are given out in eight different musical genres.
Green Day got the alternative rock music prize but the big winners were Taylor Swift and Michael Jackson. Swift got five prizes - including artist of the year - but couldn't collect them as she's in the UK.
Leona Lewis was also there to represent the UK and grab a slice of the limelight. The 24-year-old will be hoping new album Echo does as well in America as her debut, which topped the Billboard charts last year.
Lady Gaga put in her usual attention grabbing performance by using her microphone to smash through a glass case around the piano, which then caught fire when she started to play.
J-Lo was another of the stars who performed on the night, although it didn't all go to plan for the singer. She fell on her backside after trying to climb a human pyramid of semi-naked dancers.
Luckily, Alicia Keys and Jay-Z managed to stay on their feet during their single, Empire State of Mind. Jay-Z topped off the night by getting two awards - best hip hop performer and best hip hop album for Blueprint 3.
Black Eyed Peas got the best pop-rock award and treated onlookers to two of their biggest hits, I Got A Feeling and Boom Boom Pow.
