Radiohead mock government nuclear plan

Thom Yorke has written a blog post opposing the government's plan to open 10 new nuclear plants across England and Wales.

Writing on the band's Dead Air Space blog under the title 'nuclear power no thanks' the singer said: "The British government is committing to build a new round of nuclear power stations for which we don't have the money. Great. Just perfect. Well done fellas."

He added that the decision had come "under pressure from the CBI (Confederation of British Industry), and under the confused assumption that we can carry on consuming power as we do now into the future."

It was announced yesterday (9 November) that the government had given the go-ahead to 10 new nuclear plants across England and Wales.

'Too afraid'

In his post Yorke added that the British government was "too afraid to think out of their own isolated political fuzzy cloud".

Giving details of the decision, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband MP referred to nuclear power as a "proven and reliable" source. He said planning laws are being streamlined to allow the plants to win quick approval.

Radiohead have long been connected to green issues - following his blog entry Yorke linked to websites for Greenpeace and Friends Of The Earth.

Last year, the band decided not to travel to America for a promotional appearance on a US TV show so they could limit their carbon footprint.

"If we don't get stuck in now, in 20 years' time it will be worse and things will be more extreme," said Yorke at the time.
