Polar bear Yukio tries to break a block of ice with frozen fruit, meat and vegetables inside at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo. The zoo started giving the icy treats to the bears 10 years ago because temperatures regularly rise to over 30C (86F) at midday.

One tired competitor looks like he's had enough after negotiating the Battle of the Somme obstacle course during the Nettle Warrior "Tough Guy" competition near Wolverhampton. People taking part also have to crawl through barbed wire and carry logs.

A seal wears sunglasses in Tokyo during the longest solar eclipse of the 21st century on Wednesday. Sadhus, or Hindu holy men, also watched through specially-designed glasses in India. The eclipse was visible across much of Asia.

Poppadoms are stacked during a world record attempt for the tallest tower of poppadoms at an Indian restaurant in Nottingham. The previous record of 1.48m (4ft 10in), which featured on Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, was broken by three centimetres.
