Radio 1 DJ Vernon Kay has received an honorary degree from the University of Bolton for services to the entertainment industry.
Vernon said it was the proudest day of his life
He shed a few tears at the ceremony, which was held in his home town. As he accepted the doctorate he described it as the proudest day of his life. He told the audience: "To be here with you guys and to be given an award by my local town... I'm not going to carry on because I'm going to burst into tears. "I did have a speech prepared but I'm not going to say it. Thank you so much, it does mean a lot and I appreciate it." The DJ graduated with hundreds of other students at the Bolton Methodist Victoria Hall. Vernon started out on children's show FBi and, as well as his weekend Radio 1 show, has hosted programmes like T4, Beat The Star and All Star Family Fortunes. The former model is married to Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess Daly and has two children, Phoebe and Amber.
