Norton: 'Eurovision is a honour'
Graham Norton
Graham Norton will host Eurovision talent contest

Graham Norton has said being asked to become the new Eurovision commentator was an "honour" and "a big deal".

Fellow Irishman Sir Terry Wogan stepped down from the post earlier this month after three decades.

Speaking about the 2009 contest, which is being held in Moscow, Norton said: "I grew up with this institution, Terry Wogan doing Eurovision."

The comedian said he hoped to make his mark at the music event but would tone down his more risqué jokes.

"I imagine this year I won't say very much because I don't want to tread into Terry's world too much," Norton added, "If I am lucky to do it again I might build my part."

Norton will also team up Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber to help pick the UK's next Eurovision entry.

The BBC TV show Your Country Needs You will embark on a search for the singer or group to perform the song.
