Miley Cyrus celebrated her 16th birthday on Sunday by singing at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles. R&B singer Chris Brown was the big winner taking home three prizes including artist of the year.

Alicia Keys had five nominations at the awards but ended up with just a pair of statuettes. She was favourite for artist of the year, but was beaten to the honour by Kiss Kiss singer Chris Brown.

American Idol and X Factor winners Jordin Sparks and Leona Lewis meet on the red carpet outside the Nokia Theatre. Leona's album, Spirit, is back at the top of the UK chart after falling to number 137.

Christina Aguilera performed at the event. The singer is planning to release her fourth studio album next year after taking time out to have a baby earlier this year with husband Jordan Bratman.

Ne-Yo also performed with the likes of Mariah Carey, Pink, Coldplay and Leona Lewis. The R&B singer released Year Of The Gentleman this year with single Closer making it to number one in the UK.

R&B star Beyonce was celebrating knocking X Factor charity single, Hero, off the number one spot in this week's chart. If I Were A Boy was up from number three last week.

Pussycat Dolls put in a bit of practice ahead of their UK tour in 2009. They start off in Aberdeen on 18 January before ending in Liverpool on 6 February. Ne-Yo's supporting them on all 13 dates.

Paris Hilton and Grammy award-winning R&B singer T-Pain presented the pop/rock male award to Rihanna's boyfriend Chris Brown. T-Pain released third album, Thr33 Ringz, earlier this month.

Chris Brown's girlfriend Rihanna won two gongs and sat next to the R&B singer for the ceremony. She was named favourite female artist in both the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories.

Kanye West CD, Graduation, won favourite rap/hip-hop album and he was also named favourite rap/hip-hop male. He said: "I'd like to thank everyone who accepted me trying to break new boundaries in music."

Chris Brown received his artist of the year award from Aerosmith members Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. The 19-year-old said he was shocked: "I'm so thankful. I thought Coldplay should have won."
