The Batmobile rolls down the red carpet at London's Leicester Square for the European premiere of The Dark Knight. Batman star Christian Bale since has been arrested (see link top right).

Welsh-born actor Christian Bale takes on the central role which sees him battling against Heath Leadger as The Joker. There are calls for Ledger to get a posthumous Oscar for his performance.

Maggie Gyllenhaal wowed fans at the premiere in a stunning black, backless dress. The actress plays Rachel Dawes - a Gotham City district attorney and childhood friend of Bruce Wayne.

Aaron Eckhart

Aaron Eckhart plays the Jekyll and Hyde character of Harvey Dent. Dent's alter-ego is a scarred, twisted villain called Two-Face.

Michael Caine, Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Aaron Eckhart

The stars pose for a group shot. The only big names missing from the premiere were Gary Oldman - who plays Commissioner Gordon - and Morgan Freeman who plays Lucius Fox.

Kelly Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne, dressed head to toe in black - perhaps in tribute to Batman, gives a big grin on her way in. The radio and TV presenter was just one of a host of celebrities at the event.

Christopher Nolan and wife Emma

The film's English director Christopher Nolan and his wife Emma. London-born Nolan also co-wrote The Dark Knight's screenplay with his brother Jonathan.
