Gary Oldman, Sir Michael Caine and Christian Bale share a moment on the black carpet. It's the second time Bale has taken on the Batman role, with Caine and Oldman reprising their Batman Begins characters.

Morgan Freeman

Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman plays the role of Lucius Fox, who essentially runs Wayne Enterprises for his boss Bruce Wayne. It's the second time the actor has taken on the role.

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard

Peter Sarsgaard with Maggie Gyllenhaal. The actress plays Rachel Dawes who is a childhood friend of Bruce Waynes. She said acting with Ledger had been really "inspirational".

Danny Devito and Michael Caine

Sir Michael Caine towers above Danny Devito. Caine paid tribute to Heath Ledger's "incredible" performance as The Joker and said he'd be surprised if the actor wasn't nominated for a posthumous Oscar.

Aaron Eckhart

Aaron Eckhart plays Harvey Dent/Two Face in the movie. Speaking of Ledger, who died of an accidental overdose in January, he said: "I'm so sad he's not here with us. We are going to honour him tonight."

Batmobile

The infamous 'Batmobile' looks less and less like the original version as Batman raises the stakes and with the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and DA Harvey Dent, attempts to rid Gotham City of crime altogether.

Batcycle

The 'Batcycle' was also on display outside the premiere so fans could get a glimpse of Batman's latest mode of transport. The Dark Knight is based on comic book characters published by DC Comics.
