George Best 'inspires' son's new show

Calum said he is determined to go without sex for 50 days
Calum Best has said his new reality TV show in which he seeks to go without sex for 50 days was inspired by his late father.

The 27-year-old lothario admitted that after George Best's passing, he "went off the rails" and the show, entitled Totally Calum Best: The Best Is Yet To Come, has given him the opportunity to prove his doubters wrong.

His father, who was a winger for Man United in the 1960s, died in November 2005 at the age of 59 after suffering multiple organ failure.

"When my old man died I fell off the rails and I kind of started just messing around a bit," Calum told Newsbeat. "But I'm going to use this opportunity as a way to focus on a lot of things I should be doing instead of wasting my time over here in the UK.

"I've got four or five friends who are betting against me already so I'm going to use this chance to prove people wrong."

Celebrity pitfalls

The show, which goes out on MTV One at 10pm on 27 July, will see the former Celebrity Love Island star trying to pursue a career in Los Angeles whilst trying to avoid the pitfalls of his celebrity lifestyle.

It will follow a similar formula to MTV's recent fly-on-the-wall shows Totally Jodie Marsh and Kerry Katona: Crazy in Love.

The show is also based on the movie 40 Days and 40 Nights in which Josh Hartnett’s character must endure self-imposed celibacy.

I'm hoping something like this will help me look at things differently in terms of my relationships and love life

"I want to get into acting so I'm going to go over there and meet some agents," he said.

"I've been saying that for a while but I haven't been pushing it.

He went on: "Some people give reality TV a bit of stick but I'm going to try and make this a bit different, a bit more fun and hopefully it will be a bit aspirational for the English viewers to see that LA lifestyle, see Hollywood and see the beach where I grew up and my old friends.

"Because I was born and raised out there, my friends were part of that scene and I know a few people so I'll be going to some nice places and going to some fun events. I think it'll be fun for the viewers to see what the Hollywood lifestyle is like."

Best says he is determined to go without sex for 50 days and he is hoping to find true love by the end of the series.

He added: "I'm hoping something like this will help me look at things differently in terms of my relationships and love life. I hope something like that comes about and it very easily could."

But before he goes celibate, Calum is holding a bachelor's bash at London's Stringfellows nightclub.
