DUP victory in Strangford

Iris Robinson took Strangford from the Ulster Unionists
The Democratic Unionist Party's Iris Robinson has been elected as MP for Strangford, as the party takes yet another seat from the Ulster Unionists.

She became the second female MP to be elected in the province, after a majority of slightly more than 1,000.

Mrs Robinson, wife of the DUP deputy leader Peter Robinson, was defeated at the last general election by the sitting MP Ulster Unionist John Taylor.

Mr Taylor announced he was stepping down from his Westminster seat at this election.

Strangford result

  • Iris Robinson DUP 18,532
  • David McNarry UUP 17,422
  • Kieran McCarthy AP 2,902
  • Danny McCarthy SDLP 2,646
  • Liam Johnston SF 930
  • Cedric Wilson NIUP 822

The constituency was at the top of the DUP's hit list.

Following Thursday victory, Mrs Robinson said: "This is an historic victory for my party. Unionism has been weakened by the policies and actions of Mr Trimble.

"I consider this result a verdict on him from the unionist people."
