Nigel Dodds is the new MP for North Belfast
Nigel Dodds is the new MP for North Belfast
The Democratic Unionist Party's Nigel Dodds has been elected MP for North Belfast.

He took the seat from the sitting MP, the Ulster Unionist Party's Cecil Walker.

North Belfast result

  • Nigel Dodds DUP 16,718
  • Gerry Kelly SF, 10,331
  • Alban Maginness SDLP, 8,592
  • Cecil Walker UUP, 4,904
  • Marcella Delaney WP, 253
  • Rainbow George VFYP, 134

Mr Dodds said it was a "day of hope, a day of renewal a day of regeneration".

He said it was an opportunity to "throw off the years of drift and decline and to move North Belfast forward".

    Victory

Mr Dodds also said his victory was "one in the eye for the pan-nationalist front" as far as the DUP was concerned.

He also said it was "one in the eye" for Ulster Unionist Party leader David Trimble who had endorsed Mr Walker in the election.

"He has been well and truely beaten out of sight by the Democratic Unionist Party in North Belfast."

Mr Dodds represents North Belfast in the Northern Ireland Assembly and is a long serving local councillor there.

He was briefly social development minister in the executive.
