Galtres Festival
Dead Rebellion's set at the Galtres Festival delighted the crowds

It is fair to say there is no shortage of bands that perform in York. Perhaps that is why when one comes along that completely blows you away it's a little surprising. I met Dead Rebellion, who did just that.

After being recommended by the drummer of popular York band, Death-Defying-Life, I made an extra special effort to make sure I saw them during my time at the Galtres festival in Crayke, north of York.

The band have gigs coming up in Leeds and Newcastle

They were playing on the main stage just before the Bluetones, who were headlining. This is in itself an achievement for a two year old band from York.

I caught up with band members Louis, Dave Jnr, Joe and L-Roc before their set, to find out where the band came from and where it is going:

"The groundwork's been done in our previous roles in bands and as producers and writers and our sound has evolved over three years. Now our band is a product we're totally happy with and we can put out there.

"We've got upcoming gigs in Leeds, Newcastle then hopefully gigs in Sheffield and Manchester will follow. Next we want to put a lot of work into it and play London to put our music on the map there."

From what I had been told about their music, this gig could have gone either very well or not so well for the band as the audience was a mix of kids, teens, adults and some more senior individuals.

The band's first single is released on September 14

What had I been told about the music? The terms killer grooves, tight rhymes, filthy basslines, phat beats, dirty electronica and cut-throat guitars had all been mentioned. So I was excited to hear what the band from York could do.

From start to finish Dead Rebellion were a blur of frantic energy, double bass drum rhythms, expert scratches and mixes from the DJ and screaming vocals from the front man who spent half his time standing on the monitor speakers at the front of the stage.

The charismatic band members with their unique and original sound should make York proud to produce a group like Dead Rebellion. Their debut single Forever Burn is out on 14 September.
