In pictures: Avebury Manor tours
The National Trust is reopening Avebury Manor on August Bank Holiday Monday as it's never been seen before – almost completely empty!
There is now a chance to see it in a way that may not be possible again. Visitors will be able to see areas which have never before opened to the public, including rooms believed to have been Alexander Keiller's bedroom and dressing room.
"Keiller was a leading archaeologist, and heir to a sizeable marmalade fortune, and central to the restoration and protection of Avebury's ancient stones," said Stephen Ponder, Curator for Avebury Manor.
Previously visitors were able to take only guided tours of the Manor, but the Trust now hopes to be able to offer visitors the chance to explore rooms at their own pace, in addition to special tours.
Stephen said: "For the first time since the Trust has owned the Manor, we hope to be able to regularly open up the Chinese Room, the Cavalier Room and its dressing room."
"Even though there are only remnants of furniture, we hope it'll be chance for visitors to look at the actual fabric of the building – such as the mythical beasts carved into the mouldings and intricate ceilings."
Another big draw is the Edwardian-designed garden with its timeless topiary.
You can visit Avebury Manor and Gardens from Monday 31st August. See www.nationaltrust.org.uk for more information. All photos by Pete Vines.
