'Framed' art at Salisbury Museum
Miss Fort of Alderbury House by George Beare
Miss Fort of Alderbury House by George Beare, 1747

Peer into the faces of the great and the good at a new exhibition of portraiture at Salisbury Museum.

Drawing together portraits mainly from the Georgian and Victorian periods, this exhibition focuses on personalities and artists who have been directly connected with Salisbury and south Wiltshire.

Situated in the Museum's upstairs temporary exhibition gallery, 'Framed' creates an intimate environment with an eclectic feel reminiscent of Victorian museum displays.

Outside the gallery, children have the chance to try on replica Georgian costumes and strike a pose in front of a gilt-edged mirror as if waiting to be painted themselves.

All the paintings are from the Museum's reserve collection. Some have not been shown publicly for 30 years or more, and sit in stark contrast with those which have already been professionally conserved.

The Museum has taken the decision to show artworks from their collections still requiring conservation to emphasise the continued need for the public's support in caring for local arts and heritage.

'Framed' - an exhibition of portraiture runs at Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum at The Kings House in Salisbury from 7 November 2009 to 16 January 2010. Visit the museum website for more information.
