BBC Look North Sports Kids 2009
Diane Youdale
Diane Youdale used to be Jet from the popular TV show Gladiators.

"Sports Kids" is a series on Look North featuring children, from across the North East and Cumbria, that deserve recognition for the sport that they do.

Any sport, any child, any ability, any age - we want to hear your story.

Whether it's tennis, fencing, riding gymnastics, or swimming, each week we feature one child with a story to tell.

Getting in touch is easy, just e-mail tellmystory@bbc.co.uk and tell us about him or her, what sport they take part in and how they got started.

The youngsters involved could be very good, set to compete on a regional, national or worldwide level, or not so good, yet turn up every week, undeterred, and really make an effort.

They may have overcome illness, injury or a particular hardship to take part in the sport. Do they take part in an unusual sport? If you feel they are worthy of a mention, let us know.

Support and recognition

BBC Look North's Jeff Brown
Jeff Brown presents Look North on BBC One at 18:30 each weekday

The event will be hosted by Diane Youdale, formerly Gladiator Jet from the TV series.

She said: "My background as an athlete and North of England gymnastics champion for many years gave me a great start in life.

"I had the opportunity to have constant access to good coaching and good facilities to develop in my sport and to have the ongoing support of others is really important.

"Had I not done any of that sport, I would not have had the opportunity to do any of the other things I have done in my life.

"It's great that BBC Look North Sports Kids is giving an opportunity for other youngsters in the region to get the kind of support and recognition I did."
