King Edward's Bay is sometimes overlooked by visitors to Tynemouth

Tyneside and Northumberland boast a wealth of well-known landmarks and picture-postcard locations, from the Angel of the North to Bamburgh Castle.

But there are many stunning places off the beaten track too.

BBC Newcastle would like to hear about your "hidden gems" - the less-well known places and views that mean something special to you.

E-mail details and photos of your hidden gem to tyne@bbc.co.uk and tell us why it's important to you.

Or, if you're on flickr, search for the "BBC hidden gems" group and share your pictures with us there.

Now is your chance to show off some of the places that you're proud of.

Some of your texts and e-mails so far...

North shore of Kielder Water. Recently opened up by new Lakeside Way path and cycle way. Unspoilt, beautiful views, all sorts of wildlife, interesting artworks, absolute tranquillity. Fabulous.

Paul, Ashington

Druridge Bay Country Park is a cracking place for a nice walk or for a picnic.

Dave, Amble

The Simonside hills at Rothbury are just lovely; a little gem.

Gwen, Alnwick

Budle Bay as it joins Bamburgh beach you sometimes feel like you're in true no-man's-land.

Mark, South Shields
