Q&A

Place of birth:

Newcastle.

Favourite view in the north-east of England?

I love the beach at Bamburgh, the glorious Sage Gateshead, and the view of Durham Cathedral when you arrive back in the North East by train.

Previous jobs?

A former geography teacher I became one of ITV's first women reporters, presented a science programme for American TV and then co-presented the BBC's award-winning daytime show Pebble Mill at One for 14 years.

Great fun but challenging. I reported from Chelsea to China, royalty to street children, and afterwards produced a TV series about flood, famine and climate change called the Task of Mankind.

Other work grew from my love of radio, music and gardening. From music programmes for BBC Radio 2 and Radio 4, presenting Woman's Hour and news reading, to TV projects with gardening celebrities Peter Seabrook and Alan Titchmarsh.

Back home on Tyneside, I produced gardening reports for Look North for five years and still enjoy working with two great northern gardeners, Stan Timmins and Eddie Wardrobe every Sunday on BBC Newcastle.
