The North East Surf Open takes place the same weekend

If you like your sport to come with an inbuilt adrenalin rush, then North Tyneside's Xperience festival is just the thing for you.

Xperience 09 takes place in Tynemouth on 24 and 25 October from 10am-5pm and will feature a host of extreme sports, from snowboarding and surfing to BMX.

There will be demonstrations from professionals in a big top and a chance for spectators to have a go themselves.

The UKPSA North East Surf Open also forms part of the event.

There will be a skate park and half pipe inside the massive marquee, on Beaconsfield - by the Blue Reef Aquarium - where Team Extreme will be showing off their skills and running coaching sessions.

Outside, there will be demonstrations by snowboarders and skiers on specially built ramps and mountainboarding will also feature.

Music from DJ Ivy will add to the laid-back vibe over the two days.

Try for yourself

The festival, which is now in its second year, is very much about letting people have a go for themselves.

As well as the coaching sessions led by Team Extreme, there will be opportunities for spectators to try mountainboarding, beatboxing, surfing and kite-flying.

You can even graffiti a small board to take home with you, in workshops run by New Line Graffiti.

Meanwhile, down on Longsands beach, some of the UK's top surfers will be competing in the North East Surf Open.

The competition is the fourth leg of seven UK Pro Surf Tour events for 2009.

South African-born Richard Sills, who is now based in Newcastle, will lead the local challenge.
