The campaign helps thousands of children each year

Hundreds of organisations are using grant money from Children in Need to help improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people.

Despite the economic conditions, the 2009 appeal raised more than £20m, which was used to help projects across the UK.

This year, Friday 19 November, marks the 31st BBC Children in Need Appeal.

Grants on Tyneside

Grants of more than £2m were awarded to 34 projects across the Tyne region.

West End Women and Girls Centre so they could provide activities, including a homework club, for girls aged nine to 13 who have disengaged from learning and school.

Splash Gateshead benefited from funding for a project to provide arts and crafts activities programmes for siblings of children who have complex and profound disabilities living in Gateshead.

Meanwhile, People and Drugs (PAD) were awarded funding for their youth work programme delivered through a "teen bar", allowing disadvantaged young people living in Blyth to record their own music, and perform in front of their peers.
