Auld Lang Syne composer from Gateshead

It's thought the composer of Auld Lang Syne came from Swalwell in Gateshead and a plaque has been unveiled outside his home.

William Shield, born in 1748, was a composer and musician and reputedly wrote the music for the song Auld Lang Syne, traditionally sung on New Year's Eve.
