The Council is also switching to electric power for its own vehicles
Gateshead Council has joined the future of electric cars by installing a network of electric car charging points across the borough.
The charging points have been installed in several popular locations from leisure centres and car parks.
The Council is also switching to electric power for some of its own vehicles.
The Civic Centre in Gateshead will be Britain's only publicly available solar powered charging station.
Improving air quality
Gateshead Councillor Martin Gannon, said: "Charging points like this provide the vital infrastructure to realise the dream of making electric cars a real alternative to petrol or diesel models for every day use in the North East.
"The advantages of electric vehicles for the environment and the savings which drivers can make are well known but now people living in Gateshead will be able to see just how practical it is to make the switch to electric."
Gateshead Council is also in partnership with One North East as part of the governments Plugged in Places initiative.
Dr Colin Herron from One North East, said: "Electric vehicles provide significant benefits including reducing CO2 emissions and improving air quality, but require appropriate recharging infrastructure.
"One North East continues to work extremely hard to ensure that this infrastructure is in place and that the region is at the very forefront of this exciting new technology."
The locations of all of Gateshead Council's charging points are on the
Gateshead Council website.
