Award for Milton Keynes swimming teacher, Doreen Adock
Doreen won Unsung Hero award at BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2009
Milton Keynes swimming instructor and BBC Unsung Sports Hero 2009 winner, Doreen Adcock has received £10,000 for her contribution to the community.
The 73-year-old was nominated for the Aviva Tell Us Your Story award by the mother of a disabled girl she teaches.
Doreen has taught over 13,000 children to swim in her 35 year career at swimming pools across Milton Keynes.
Doreen told BBC Three Counties she intends to spend the money on a holiday to Canada for herself and her husband.
Doreen said she has been swimming all her life: "I used to swim in the River Thames near Putney Bridge, it didn't matter where there was water I'd be swimming in it."
Doreen said she was delighted to receive an award that recognises her work: "I teach blind children, I teach them no matter what their handicap is as long as they like water."
Doreen received an award last year too
Doreen was nominated for the prize by Sandra Bald after she refused to take payment for teaching Sandra's daughter, who has downs syndrome, to swim at Woughton Leisure Centre:
"She has so much energy. She is fantastic.
"She has taught so many people in Milton Keynes to swim, many of them with special needs, blind, deaf or in wheelchairs," Sandra said.
"Doreen teaches anyone to swim and treats them all the same, her club is so inclusive.
"I took one look at the award and thought I had to put Doreen forward. So many parents and children voted for her that she won."
Doreen is no stranger to receiving prizes.
In 2009 she won the Unsung Hero award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, collecting her accolade from swimmer Rebecca Adlington and snooker player Jimmy White at a televised ceremony in Sheffield.
The prestigious BBC award is given to someone who, in the opinion of the judging panel, goes that extra mile to make a difference to sport.
Doreen started to teach swimming at the Carlton Club in Milton Keynes in 1974 and in 2002 she opened Quest Swimming Club based at Leon School in Bletchley.
