The third annual SuperGay Middlesbrough Pride event has been hailed as a huge success, as organisers say over 4500 people came out to celebrate.

The event took place between 15 - 20 September, 2009.

It took place in venues across Middlesbrough, and around 600 people turned out for the SuperGay Parade, which took place on Saturday.

SuperGay has received praise from across the region for the wide variety of events during the celebration.

Simon Hatfield, organiser of the event: "Some people are still amazed that a festival like this can exist in Middlesbrough, each year we prove that it can, and it will compete with our City counterparts.

"As a voluntary committee, our challenge now is to top this year's festival in 2010!"

Despite the huge attendance many were surprised the festival had earned the support of the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, who sent a letter saying: "I wanted to send my best wishes to everyone celebrating at SuperGay.

"Together we've done a lot - but we can never be complacent and must always be vigilant to see that progress isn't reversed.

"We will stand at your shoulders until the fight for equality is won."
