A spate of attacks at a Middlesbrough allotment site has sparked calls for help to catch the culprits.

The Saltersgill community allotment has been the target attacks including a slashed polytunnel and damage to a greenhouse and garden furniture.

Councillor Paul Thompson said: "These allotments are a precious resource and are treasured by those who work on them throughout the year."

Anyone with information should contact Cleveland Police on 01642 326326.

Catherine Boyle, Growing Together Project Officer at Middlesbrough Environment City, said: "The whole plot has been left in a mess and the volunteers are devastated.

"Work to clear up the plot and repair the perimeter fence is under way, but this is becoming an increasingly common problem and it's time we put a stop to it.

"I'd urge anyone out there who knows who's responsible to contact the police, and for everyone in the neighbourhood to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity."

Councillor Paul Thompson, Middlesbrough Council's Executive Member for Streetscene Services, said: "These allotments are a source of wholesome food which is seeing Middlesbrough develop its growing reputation as a Healthy Town.

"These mindless attacks are damaging all that good work - the sooner the culprits are caught and brought to justice, the better for all concerned."

Anyone with information about the attacks is asked to contact Cleveland Police on 01642 326326 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
