Can the Surrey chippy batter the rest to win the top title at the national awards?
South East England's finest fish and chip shops have been shortlisted for the 23rd annual National Fish and Chip Awards, to be judged in 2011.
Seafare in Burpham is one of 30 chip shops nominated for the main prize of 'Best Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop.'
The tradition of eating fish and chips in the UK is 150 years old.
The National Fish & Chip Awards aim to serve as a showcase for excellence within the industry.
The nation's love affair with fish and chips is recognised in the awards
The local Surrey fish and chip shop claim that using fresh ingredients as well as providing excellent customer service has helped make it the best in the business.
Dishing up traditional fish and chips to Burpham residents, for the last 30 years, the family run business also raises funds for local charities.
Staff annually forfeit a day's wages, as well as selling fish and chips at a reduced rate as part of their fundraising efforts.
The shop which is managed by Corin Lye, holds a five star quality rating from Seafish, the non departmental public body (NDPB) sponsored by the four UK government fisheries departments .
The Lye family also have another shortlisted shop, in Peterborough.
Even if they don't win the top accolade, the Burpham shop can look forward to a surge in sales, according to the Awards' organisers.
They say regional finalists can see their turnover increase by up to 30%, with the regional winners' turnover possibly increasing by up to 50%.
Entrants are judged by a group composed of members of the National Federation of Fish Friers, the National Edible Oils Distributors Association and Seafish, together with industry experts.

The Best Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year category is open to all independent fish and chip takeaway shops with three outlets or less.
The 30 shortlisted shops will be visited by a Seafish auditor in partnership with an independent industry judge to determine the top shop in each of the ten geographical regions.
Those ten finalists will go on the national final to be held in London in January 2011.
