Mysterious chalk symbols which have been found outside houses in a Surrey town could be alerting thieves to possible targets.

Police are warning people in Caterham to be vigilant after two incidents where symbols were etched on pavements.

Insp Elaine Burtenshaw from Surrey Police said five circles indicated to burglars it was a wealthy household.

She said another known symbol was an open book which indicated a vulnerable female was inside a property.
