Lafarge say Silverdale landfill smell may never go away

Some people can kick up a bit of a stink about landfill sites

The company that owns a landfill site in Newcastle-under-Lyme say the smell coming from it may never disappear altogether.

People living near Walley's Quarry in Silverdale say the odour can still be unbearable, despite moves by Lafarge to reduce it.

To lessen the stink, the firm repaired a pipe system used to burn off gasses.

Lafarge claims the smell is now not as bad as it was before Christmas, but admits it is still getting complaints.

Ruth Roll from Lafarge, said: "I can't guarantee that no, there will never ever be a smell complaint again from the site.

"But I think that the work that went in at the end of last year, and has continued through this year, will mean that residents will see a really, really noticeable difference."

Impact on residents' lives

Karen Davies, who lives near to the site, insists that it is still having an impact on residents' lives.

She said: "First thing in the morning and then it's back again at dinnertime. You can smell it without having the windows open; it's coming through the vents.

"I've got air fresheners in every room just to mask the smell."

"At least they're addressing the issue; they know there's a problem there. But it doesn't help the fact that we're stuck in it," added Davies.
