When the coalition government announced its spending plans for local councils in December 2010, Staffordshire learned that its funding from central government was being cut by over £10m.

Philip Atkins, leader of Staffordshire County Council, has now presented the authority's budget, and 500 jobs are under threat. He said he hoped most would be lost through retirement and voluntary redundancy.

Elizabeth Glinka, BBC's Staffordshire's political reporter, compiled her report after speaking to him.
