Danielle says spending time with her new family eases her fears
Former model Danielle Bux from Cardiff became an instant stepmother to four boys when she married footballer turned TV presenter Gary Lineker.
She examines how others cope with the challenge of getting to know their partner's children in a one-off documentary for BBC TV.
"You'd have to be a fool to walk into a family and think it's all going to work out," she says.
Danielle Lineker: My New Stepfamily is on BBC Three at 2100 BST on Tuesday.
Stepfamilies are the fastest growing family type in Britain, with as many as one-in-three children experiencing family breakdown by the age of 16, and a third of the overall population being part of a stepfamily situation in one way or another.
Single mother to seven-year-old Ella and a stepchild herself, Danielle married the former Leicester City, Everton, Barcelona and England striker in 2009.
In doing so, she became not just a new wife, but a new stepmother to his four boys from his first marriage, including eldest son George who is just 12 years her junior.
Gary and Danielle had been dating for two years when they married in 2009
The programme follows Danielle as she struggles to find the right balance between being friend and parent to the boys.
But she told the Radio Times that she feels she understands teenage boys after growing up with five half-brothers in Ely, Cardiff.
"They're less emotional (than girls)," she says.
"As long as they have their PlayStations and their food, they're OK."
She adds that spending time together, especially on holiday, helps ease her fears about fitting in.
"Creating a new family doesn't happen overnight and the more memories you create together as a group the more of a bond you create," she says.
Danielle meets other stepchildren and listens to their accounts of the emotional and physical upheaval of trying to survive their parents' marital breakdown, and the establishing of new family units.
She hears first-hand stories about integrating into a new stepfamily and how moving between houses and between parents becomes a regular part of new family life.
Through hearing about their experiences, Danielle hopes to gain a deeper understanding of how she relates to her own new stepfamily, and how she brings her daughter and Gary's sons together to form a new family unit.
Will the fact that she was a stepchild herself help Danielle, and can she become a model stepmum?
