Hands on the torque: Frank is named Radio Personality of the Year

Frank Hennessy has been named Radio Personality of the Year at the 2010 Celtic Media Festival.

The Cardiff-born entertainer has been broadcasting for BBC Radio Wales since 1984 and currently presents Celtic Heartbeat and Frank and Amy.

"I am absolutely thrilled. I'm surprised, elated and pleased as punch," said Frank.

"I was in a category with nominees who are all very experienced and well-respected."

Frank's competitors for the prize were Fred MacAulay from BBC Radio Scotland, Iain MacIllemhicheil from BBC Radio nan Gaideal and Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí from RTÉ na Gaeltachta.

Steve Austins, acting editor of BBC Radio Wales, said: "This award is thoroughly deserved.

"Frank's work ethic is exceptional and his dedication to the BBC Radio Wales audience and his music is truly outstanding."

In Celtic Heartbeat, Frank shares his love of folk, roots and traditional Welsh music every Saturday night, striking a chord with listeners across the world via the internet.

For many years he also co-presented I'll Show You Mine with the late Ray Gravell, sharing tunes and tales with the rugby legend.

The Sunday evening show is now known as Frank and Amy, with Frank's new co-presenter being fellow musician Amy Wadge.

However, he once shared his DJ duties with the former First Minister Rhodri Morgan on an edition of the show in February.

BBC Cymru Wales's Torchwood: Children of Earth has also been awarded an accolade - Best Drama Series - at the festival in Newry, Northern Ireland.
